








PORTRAIT OF KING GEORGE I (1660-1727) AFTER SIR GODFREY KNELLER (1646-1723)
Full length portrait of King George I standing, wearing robes of state, and resting his hand on the orb which is on the table with the crown and sceptre, the east end of Westminster Abbey and St Stephen's Chapel beyond.
This portrait is based on the official state portrait of the king painted by Kneller in 1715. The finest version, presented to Sir Robert Walpole and now at Houghton, was described by Horace Walpole as 'the only picture for which he sat in England'.
