Fine early 18th century mezzotint of portrait of King George I (1660 - 1727) half-length in an oval, wearing wig, lace cravat, robes, ermine cloak, chain and George.
Titled Georgius D.G. Mag: Brit: Fran: et Hib: Rex Fidei Defensor &c.
Lettered with title and production details: 'G. Kenller [sic] S.R.Imp. et Mag: Brit: Baronet: pinx.', and 'J. Smith Fec. et ex.'
John Smith (1652 - 1743) Engraver, especially of portraits in mezzotint. Worked in London for print-publishers Richard Palmer, Edward Cooper, Alexander Browne, Pierce Tempest, Isaac Beckett, Grace Beckett; from 1692 he published his own plates (from rented rooms in the Lion and Crown in Russell Street, Covent Garden). He was closely associated with Sir Godfrey Kneller; to whom he dedicated his translation of Le Brun’s lecture on the representation of the passions.
