A PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY FRENCH PASTORAL SANGUINE ENGRAVINGS AFTER FRANCOIS BOUCHER (1703 - 1770)
A matched pair of charming and highly decorative 18th century French pastoral sanguine engravings both after Francois Boucher.
The first features a bucolic scene of extensive farm buildings with a meandering river and fisherman and is by Gilbert after Boucher and the second slightly larger impression is by Demartean also after Boucher, which shows children in a farmyard playing amidst trees and ruins.
Sanguine derives from the French word ‘sang’ for blood’ and it is is an earth tone intaglio ink of varying brown with hints of red.
These fine and romantic antique engravings are in excellent condition and they are now conservation grade mounted and ready to hang mounted in matching high quality antique wooden frames which retain their original gilding.
